1991 Grand Wagoneer Final Edition
This is one of my 91 Grand Wagoneer Final Editions that got some serious fire damage about three years ago. Long story made short, It had the typical vapor lock problem and I was going to put a electric fuel pump on. Pulled it in the garage and on a hot August afternoon and began without preparation, having a hose with one end plugged to put on the steel line when it was cut. Well needless to say when I cut the steel line fuel began to flow, the tank was full. I lay on the creeper and watched the gas flow across the garage floor to "incandescent light bulb and thing got warm when it broke the bulb. The car and me became lit up. I got second and third degree burns on arm, shoulder and back, healed up quickly though. The Wagoneer was burnt on the drivers door, interior on drivers side and head liner. The heat melted wires causing electric shorts and consequently burnt most of the wiring in the vehicle.
It set in the back yard until February this year. I always thought the VIN was extremely high compared to other 91 I had checked. The build date on my rig is June 1991 and Chrysler confirms the assembly line was shut down on July 19, 1991. I bought a unlimited car fax membership and went to work on the computer to see what I could find. Chrysler does not seem to have very good records for the finial Grand Wagoneer. After figuring out how to change the 8th or 9th check sum digit in the VIN I was able to pull up a Car Fax on Just 91 Grand Wagoneer. After hundreds of checks I finally got the a VIN that Car Fax showed did not exist. By back tracking I was able to show the the VIN on by 91 only had 62 VINs issued after It, So I decided it might be worth restoring.
The rig was striped inside and out, everything but the engine was removed. Most of the interior had to be replaced to get rid of the smoke smell. All rust, what little there was was removed and repainted including the frame.
Some of the thumbnails are not very clear but the enlarged picture will be fine. Click on any picture to get larger view.
All exposed body panels including the roof was covered with Dynomat extreme, this is the stuff the use on high dollar speaker boxes.
The following pictures are of the results of 5 months and untold hours . It does have sun roof with split overhead console.
During the restore I made several Major upgrades. Installed the Edelbrock Multipoint injection system, Installed a AW4 4speed overdrive transmission. and changed gear ratio to 3.73 with limited slip in front and track lock in rear with lock out hubs.
The front bumper is for a 07 Jeep JK, I made several modifications. Doing
away with their 5mph crush push bars and building my own and making the
stainless fillers. This bumper is only 1/2" narrower than the body on each side.
It will be my daily driver and it is getting about the
same gas mileage as
it did before the work but much stronger. But about as good as my wife's 06
Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 Hemi***
